toner cartridge

I notice that the box containing a new toner cartridge has been opened, and a cartridge is sitting in the box, underneath the packing material...but I can't tell if it's a new cartridge (waiting to be installed when needed) or an old cartridge that should go be recycled and not hang out underneath the gazebo. As always, I'd be happy to the actual hauling, but I just need official word that I'm throwing out the right thing and not the wrong (good, new, useful) thing.
